UNEP – Integrated Environmental Assessment (IEA) training manuals and modules Integrated Environmental Assessment (IEA) is defined as the process of producing and communicating future-oriented, policy-relevant information on key interactions between the natural environment and human society. The methodology underlying IEA has been pioneered and championed by the Global Environment Outlook (GEO), the flagship assessment and reporting process on the status and direction of the global environment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). GEO is a consultative, participatory, capacity building process and a series of reports, analyzing environmental change, causes and impacts, and policy responses, providing information for decision making at global and sub-global levels. A full overview of UNEP’s IEA training modules is provided below. Click here (unep.org/ieacp/iea/training/instructor_guidance.aspx) for the instructor guidance notes. The training modules can also be downloaded in Chinese, Spanish, French, Russian and Arabic through this link: unep.org/ieacp/iea/ September 2011: IEA training manual volume 2 – Climate change vulnerability and impact assessment in cities This new module analyzes the results of recent research on climate change, its impact on cities and options for responding. Its primary aim is to foster debate and present methodologies for evaluating the level of vulnerability and the adaptation capacity of urban centres. seachangecop.org/node/1950 November 2010: Training manual on IEA and reporting volume 2 – Application of the ecosystem approach in integrated environmental assessments This module will help users: 1. become familiar with the conceptual, methodological and technical aspects of the ecosystem approach and serve as a guide on how to incorporate those aspects into an IEA; and 2. understand the importance of the ecosystem concept and of the services that ecosystems provide, in order to prepare this type of assessments. seachangecop.org/node/1949 2009: IEA training manual volume 2 – Vulnerability and impact assessments for adaptation to climate change This module outlines key approaches to help in assessing vulnerability to climate change in the context of other non-climatic issues and stresses such as environmental change and consumption levels, and their integration with other drivers and pressures. In this way, they make use of the general DPSIR framework (Drivers, Pressures, State, Impacts, Responses). The DPSIR framework also helps in mainstreaming responses to climate change with other development measures. seachangecop.org/node/1948 2009: Integrated environmental assessment training manual (Summary) This booklet summarizes the contents of the IEA Training Manual: A Training Manual on Integrated Environmental Assessment and Reporting, developed through a collaborative initiative among the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and more than 40 experts from around the world. The main manual consists of two volumes - Volume one includes eight core methodological modules, while Volume two currently includes one thematic module. seachangecop.org/node/1951 November 2008: IEA training manual volume 1 – A training manual on integrated environmental assessment and reporting (Introduction) The purpose of the IEA Training Manual is to help build capacity for forward-looking integrated environmental assessment (IEA) and reporting at the sub-global level. Authors define IEA as the process of producing and communicating future-oriented, policy relevant information on key interactions between the natural environment and human society. The methodology underlying IEA has been pioneered and championed by the Global Environment Outlook, UNEP’s flagship assessment on the status and direction of the global environment. seachangecop.org/node/1952
