UNEQUAL JUSTICE...UNEQUAL OUTRAGE!!! There was the post of a graphic this morning, which is getting a lot of reaction from across the nation, including from me. The original graphic showed murder victims Trayvon Martin and Marley Lion. Both were teenagers, both were unarmed when shot to death. Trayvon was killed while walking home holding a bag of candy. The circumstance of Marleys murder, in my opinion, was even worse. He was asleep in his car when 3 black men robbed him, and one of them shot him to death. There was wall to wall coverage of Trayvons killing for about a year and a half. And as a result, most Americans know his name. Outside the Charleston, South Carolina area, Id wager that no one knows the name, Marley Lion. As I, and many other folks commented on the original post, the difference in the cases was the fact that Trayvons killer, George Zimmerman (seen in the inset of my altered graphic), wasnt immediately arrested because of what many feel was a bogus claim of self-defense under Floridas flawed stand your ground law. And, Zimmerman today is a free man, found not guilty by a jury with no blacks on it. In Marleys case, three men were arrested as soon as they were tracked down by the cops...and, to avoid the death penalty, all plead guilty. Two of them (seen in the inset with Marley) were sentenced to 28-years in prison, the third man got 12-years in the slammer. It does bother me theres more media attention and public outcry on crimes involving the killing of blacks by whites...crimes which may have a racial component. It strikes me as unfair, not only in Marley Lions case, but in particularly vile black on black murders -- that black folks and black leaders, dont express the same sense of outrage. How many of you are familiar with the murder of Delric Miller in Detroit? He was a one-year old black baby asleep in his crib, when killed by some black gang members in a drive-by shooting over dope. Had Delric been killed by a bunch of white skinheads...I guarantee you it wouldve been national news for months, there wouldve been mass protests, and the crime would have been loudly decried by black leaders, possibly even Attorney General Holder and President Obama. During the time of the Zimmerman trial -- there was a crime which I felt was even more reprehensible than the killing of Trayvon Martin. It happened in the town of Brunswick, Georgia. Three black men, all in their late teens, stopped and tried to rob a white woman who was taking her baby for a walk in his stroller. She resisted...one of them shot her in the stomach, then shot the baby point-blank between the eyes! That crime got a good deal of media play in the state of Georgia, but barely anything on the national level. Had you heard about that? Do you recall his name? [For the record, it was 13-month old Antonio Santiago]. There were no protest marches, no condemnation, no constant national media coverage of baby Antonios killing. Rev. Al Sharpton, talked about Trayvons death nearly every day for more than a year on his talk show on MSNBC. He made no mention of Antonios case. Of course, the prep who shot and killed him, pictured next to the baby, was arrested soon after the murder. And less than 6-months later, was found guilty of armed robbery and murder, and will be spending the rest of his life in prison. His accomplices will also be spending hard-time behind bars. As my headline to this post states: Unequal justice....unequal outrage!!!
