UNILAG to offer graduate courses in petroleum engineering osundefender.org/?p=209261 The University of Lagos has said that it is upgrading its facilities and work force to offer graduate courses in petroleum engineering. The institution also said that it would achieve this with the support of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund. The Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, Prof. Adetokunbo Denloye, stated this when a delegation from the PTDF led by its Executive Secretary, Olufemi Ajayi, visited the university on Monday. The team was in the school to inspect some of the facilities the PTDF presented to the department as part of the agency’s intervention efforts. Denloye, while addressing members of the delegation, said the major challenge facing the department was the possibility of embarking on the training of petroleum engineers at both master’s and doctorate levels. “We intend to commence master’s and doctorate programmes in Petroleum Engineering. We are in the process of recruiting more staff, especially at the higher level, so that we can have someone who can provide academic leadership in the department. We are currently in the process. The position has been advertised and right now we are in the review process and hopefully, before the end of this year, we should be through with that,” he said. Ajayi, in his remarks, noted that the Federal Government agency was committed to developing the oil and gas industry, being the mainstay of the nation’s economy. Apart from UNILAG, he stressed that the agency had intervened in upgrading facilities in 25 other universities. He said, “What you are seeing is being replicated in 25 other universities around the country. From my experience, what we have here is almost at par – in terms of facilities – with what we have in some of the universities in the United States and United Kingdom. What this means is that the PTDF and by extension, the Federal Government is moving in the right direction.”
