UNIQUE DISPLAY (In 1984) I asked permission of the RSL Portland if I could submit one of Les pictures and of course I asked Les too. This article was one of several of mine about Portland published in POST in the 80s. The others being St. Peters Bridgewater, AL SHUWAIKH, live sheep Carrier, Anzac and maybe one or two others. *This clipping is one John Francis had kept, along with the inset of the solider memorial, which was later moved as part of the new Municipal Offices and forecourt layout 1984-5. The quest was really to put Portlands display on the map as being wholly unique. In addition to council, many members of the community and Dahlia and Rose clubs, supplied wreaths and flowers for the displays each year. Submissions to POST were always subject to editing to fit available space. AUSTRALIASIAN POST 1984 [text] *ONCE a year in Portland (V) photographer Les Staff climbs the Norfolk pine tree on the cliff overlooking the historic harbour to take a picture (left) of the Anzac Day Ceremony for the local RSL branch. Portland people are proud of their floral display arranged in the Memorial Triangle, and many wonder if there is a better layout anywhere in Australia than this one, recorded on Anzac Day 1983. The annual display, which has been organised for the last 20 years, is designed by local surveyor Mr Selwyn Williams and an RSL sub-committee, with flowers supplied from the Town Councils Botanic Gardens nursery. The display laid out on the lawns by the war memorial and in sight of the Old Town Hall, civic centre and the new council offices still being built, depict the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, the original Anzac Rising Sun badge of the Australian Imperial Forces, and the red cross of St George as well as the words ANZAC and LEST W FORGET. The ceremony followed the march, and was attended by a RAN unit visiting the town.
