UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE 1775 Unfortunately our Veterans now understand how American Merchant Seaman feel about the loss of our Hospital Care which was paid for by tonnage Tax on all ships foreign and domestic entering US Ports. The name was changed to US Public Health Service. President Ronald Reagan closed our hospitals denied seaman and fisherman their health care while still collecting the tonnage tax. Connived with the US Coast Guard to reduce ships manning levels from 35 to 20. Friend of mine from Shoals IN was booted out of the USPHS Hospital in New Orleans, forced to live in a flop house because he was unfit for duty, contacted Tuberculosis, and returned to his fathers home by Shoals Boat Club to die! Jerry Sherfick R.I.P The Merchant Seaman was emancipated with the Seamans Act of 1915. Unfortunately the US Government is now treating our Armed Forces like Merchant Seaman
