UNTIL 3PM TODAY: Sandbags Available to Residents Today in Preparation for Possible Heavy Rains The National Weather Service has advised of the possibility of severe thunderstorms affecting South Florida beginning this afternoon and continuing through Saturday morning, April 17-20, 2014. A slow-moving warm front is forecast to move through the area today, followed by a cold front on Friday and early Saturday which could result in heavy rainfall and potentially cause localized flooding. To help residents in low-lying areas of the City prepare for the possibility of localized flooding, Hollywoods Department of Public Works will make up to ten (10) sandbags available per household at the Public Works facility located 1600 South Park Road from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. today, Thursday April 17th. Proof of Hollywood residency will be required (Drivers License or Identification Card with Hollywood address, Utility Bill, etc.). There is a limited supply of sandbags. If you are not in a flood prone area, the City requests you do not seek sandbags and reserve these bags for residents who truly need them to prevent floodwaters from entering their homes. Additionally, residents are advised that sandbags have a limited shelf life. Once they are placed outside and become saturated, the bags begin to deteriorate. If you do not end up needing your sandbags in the coming days, the City advises that you store the bags in a dry area such as a garage or storage shed to preserve them for future use.
