UPA Government Focuses On Urban Renewal And Infrastructure Development The share of India’s urban population (337 million) may increase to about 40% of total population by the year 2021 and will contribute significantly to the GDP. However, this higher productivity is dependent upon the availability and quality of infrastructure services. Keeping this in mind, the government started the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in 2005. Since its inception, the programme has focused on infrastructure development, service delivery mechanisms and community participation. 554 projects at a total cost of Rs 62,253 crore have been sanctioned under the Urban Infrastructure & Governance sub-mission of JNNURM by the UPA regime.
