UPCOMING ROCKET LAUNCH IN RUSSIA A Soyuz 2-1B rocket was rolled to the launch pad at Site 31/6 of the Baikonur Cosmodrome in preparation for the final launch of the Soyuz workhorse in 2014 which will be the 22nd launch of the Soyuz rocket family this year - remaining the most flown launch vehicle across the globe followed by the Chinese Long March family, and the Atlas V and Proton launchers. Liftoff of the Soyuz is planned at 18:55 UTC on Friday, December 26 to mark the start of a ten-minute ascent mission to deliver the Resurs-P #2 Earth observation satellite into a Low Earth Orbit. Follow the launch live on Internet: tsenki/en/broadcast/ The Resurs-P satellites are part of Russias civilian Earth observation and remote sensing program, operated in strict separation from the military optical reconnaissance programs, although Resurs and its predecessors are based on their military companions. Dating back to 1979, the Resurs program started out with a series of film-return satellites using the Zenit film-return architecture. The first electro-optical Resurs satellite flew in 1983 and over the 1990s, the transition from the film-return to the digital imaging satellites was completed. SpaceFlight101/Roscosmos
