UPDATE - West Midlands Police has moved to reassure the public that officers remain on patrol across the region and on standby to reach anyone in need of help. The “business as usual message comes in response to information received yesterday (Dec 8) suggesting police officers could be subjected to an attack. “It was anonymous, but credible information, said Assistant Chief Constable Garry Forsyth, “and we acted swiftly to relay details to officers and remind them of the importance to remain vigilant. “We took steps last night to ensure the safety of our officers and staff: some were held on duty at the end of their shifts whilst they were given the security reminder but at NO time were officers taken off the streets. “Our commitment is to protect the public from harm and, though we take all security issues seriously, we will not be distracted from that promise. “It’s important to also stress that the information we received did not refer to the wider public and there was no increased risk to people. Officers continue to patrol and respond to 999 and 101 calls for service, whilst departments across the force − from Traffic to CID and child protection − continue to operate as normal. Safety measures issued to officers and staff included advice about travelling to and from work in partial uniform as well as police station security, whilst the information prompting the reminder continues to be assessed and investigated by Counter Terrorism Unit officers. Anyone with security concerns should call police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. The national anti-terrorist hotline can be contacted on 0800 789 321. The national security level remains at ‘severe’ and the public are urged to report any suspicious activity.
