UPDATE- QUITMAN, TEXAS (KETK) — A third person has been taken into custody in connection with the death of two East Texas toddlers. Dalton Lee German, 22, of North Little Rock, Arkanas, was arrested and is currently in the Pulaski County Jail in Arkansas. He faces charges of injury to a child, a second degree felony. Police said German was a friend to the mother, Daphne Elizabeth McDaniels, who was charged Monday with capital murder in the death of her daughters, 3-year-old Gabriella Guerroro and 1-year-old Natalye Price. According to the autopsy, the girls died from blunt force trauma to the head. Authorities were first alerted to the situation on Thursday, July 24, when German, a neighbor, called Quitman Police to report two children who were not breathing and would not wake up. Multiple witnesses told officers that Thomas Liles, 19, of Quitman, was seen running from the Dogwood Villa Apartments where the two deaths occurred. They also saw the man throw a large item into a dumpster near the building. The items were consistent with having come from the childrens apartment, said police. Chief Cole stated Liles was taken into custody by one of his officers for tampering with evidence a week later. Child Protective Services spokeswoman Shari Pulliam said their agency previously investigated the childrens living conditions. On December 17, 2013, allegations of medical and physical neglect were made at another location. The home had no running water, large amounts of trash and debris were everywhere and one of the children had a bump on their leg that was infected. During the investigation, the mother was able to move into adequate and safe housing for her children. She was also able to get care for the childrens basic and extended needs, including medical help. The case was completed on February 21, 2014. At the end of the investigation, the mother was living alone with her children, who were in daycare while she worked. People here, were all family, said neighbor, Selma Blair. What happened, its a loss to all of us here. The thing I can remember about that little girl, those little girls, were their smiles. Thats going to haunt me forever. Dalton German said he often babysat the two girls and he just saw them Wednesday night before they went to sleep. Theyre like my nieces, said German. I mean, a lot of people around here are like family. They were little bundles of joy. German said Liles is the one who came and got him, and told him the girls were dead. German said he immediately called 911. Liles was indicted September 3, and released on October 1, from the Wood County Jail on $50,000 bond. Liles was taken into custody again for injury to a child on Wednessday. He is currently being held on $1 million bond.
