UPDATE: BENJAMIN HARRISON BRIDGE REMAINS CLOSED; PROGRESS MADE Repairs completed; bridge will remain closed for additional testing Benjamin Harrison Bridge/Route 156 (Prince George/Charles City) – During the Benjamin Harrison Bridge closure extension, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have been working around the clock to identify and resolve any issues that would prevent safe travel on the bridge. Repairs have been completed; however, the bridge will remain closed through at least tomorrow morning, when crews will return to conduct additional testing. “We’d rather be sure that the bridge is safe and fully operational before reopening to traffic,” said Ron Hobson, P.E., Area Construction Engineer, “As long as tomorrow’s tests are successful, we expect the bridge to reopen by Monday morning rush hour.” Until the bridge reopens, drivers should follow the posted detour or use an alternate route. Local drivers are encouraged to use the posted detour: Take Jordan Point Road (Route 106/156) south to Route 10 west. Take Interstate 295 north to Route 5 (Exit 22A) back to Jordan Point Road (Route 106/156). Through travelers can use Interstates 295 and 64 or the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry as alternate routes to the Hampton Roads area. Marine traffic will remain unaffected as the lift span remains open during closures. Drivers should call 511 or visit 511virginia.org to check on the status of the bridge before traveling.
