UPDATE: Divers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources recovered two juveniles today, Sunday, that had fallen through the ice of a rural rock quarry north of Spencer. According to a press release issued by the DNR, first responders arrived and navigated steep, rocky terrain to reach the waters edge. Divers located the two juveniles within minutes of entering the water. They had been submerged for approximately an hour and a half in 11 feet of water. Both victims were taken to IU Health-Bloomington Hospital; their condition remained unknown as of press time. The pair had reportedly been ice fishing with family members at the rock quarry near the 2400 block of Romona Road when the incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. The ice was measured at less than three inches thick. Emergency units on the scene included the Indiana DNR, Owen County Sheriff’s Department, Owen Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Owen County Rescue Team, Owen County EMS, and Air Evac. Conservation Officers note that the warming temperatures had contributed to the deterioration of the ice.
