UPDATE: “Do Not Use” Order Lifted for Last Remaining Customer Area in Clendenin The “do not use” order has been lifted for the last customer area in West Virginia American Water’s Kanawha Valley district. Customers in the Clendenin area may begin flushing according to the established guidelines. Although the online map currently reflects that all areas have turned blue, customers should keep in mind that precautionary boil water advisories are in place for several smaller groups of customers throughout the district after water storage tanks were depleted following excessive flushing activities. A list of boil water advisories currently in effect can be found at amwater/wvaw/alerts/WV-AlertList.html. Furthermore, earlier this morning with guidance from the W.Va. Bureau for Public Health, the company issued a notice that customers in the towns of Buffalo, Frazier’s Bottom and Pliny are advised to not drink and have limited contact with their water. New water sampling results indicate additional flushing and sampling is required in this area until water quality sampling data can be verified. The temporary local 24/7 hotline established to answer customer inquiries about the map will be taken out of service at 4 p.m. All customer contact should be directed to our 24x7 Customer Service Center at 1-800-685-8660. A statement released last night by Adjutant General James A. Hoyer reinforced that the interagency team has been sampling at the plant at both the parts per million (ppm) and parts per billion (ppb) levels throughout this process to ensure the highest level of confidence in the system. “When the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provided us with the 1 ppm public health standard we focused on testing at the parts per million level,” said Hoyer. “In light of the CDC’s additional guidance Wednesday night related to the abundance of caution for pregnant women and to ensure the highest level of public health we will continue to test the plant output at parts per million. Once the system is fully restored, we will test the system at the parts per billion level to ensure non-detectable levels in the water.” Customers in lifted zones will need to flush their home plumbing systems. West Virginia American Water has provided flushing guidance via its website, call center and the media. Please do not flush beyond the necessary 25 minutes as it may put additional strain on the water system.
