UPDATE: More than a dozen horses died after a large fire broke out at a barn just south of Edwardsburg. Authorities estimate there were about 17 horses inside the Smithfield Stables during the fire. None of them made it out. Fifteen fire departments responded to the fire. Around 75 firefighters were there to assist with water transportation. Since the barn is in such a rural area, there are no fire hydrants nearby. Firefighters had to travel more than a mile away to access water and bring it back to the scene. “It’s a challenge at first to get it going,” said Edwardsburg Fire Chief Bruce Stack. “The other challenge is that it is so far back off the road. We probably have 900 feet of hose on the ground to get back here.”
