UPDATE ON BODY FOUND IN COLONIAL HEIGHTS: From Virginia State Police: HOPEWELL, Va.- During the course of an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in the City of Hopewell Monday (Oct. 20), Virginia State Police are also now investigating the discovery of a body at a Colonial Heights motel. At approximately 10:15 a.m. Monday, Hopewell Police officers encountered a subject driving east on the railroad tracks in the 4700 block of Western Street in the City of Hopewell. The 2007 Mazda stopped once police arrived and the driver, Gary E. Lee, 54, of Colonial Heights, Va., refused to exit the car. After more than an hour of attempted negotiations with Lee, he began making threatening gestures towards the officers. Lee was shot and died at the scene. Later Monday, as part of the Hopewell investigation, state police were led to a motel in the 200 block of Jennick Drive in Colonial Heights where a deceased female had been found in one of the rooms. Investigators confirmed that the woman, Carol E. Lee, 53, was the wife of Mr. Lee. The motel served as the couple’s residence. The bodies of both Lees have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting remains ongoing at this time. Upon completion of the state police investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney for final review and adjudication.
