UPDATE ON Ellen McKinnons 3 dogs: ************************************************************************************** UPDATE ON THE GIRLS: Yummy, Breeze and Wink went thru the ice on the retaining pond at McVille tonight. Our wonderful volunteer Fire Dept worked to get all 3 out alive. They were in the water for over an hour. We could hear them screaming but couldnt locate where they were. My initial thought was that they were in a trap. The pond has an aerator in the middle. Apparently they were heading across and fell thru as they got to the softer area. All other ponds are frozen solid, enough to drive on, but the retaining pond never freezes solid. We didnt even know it was there until tonight. The long story short is that they were obviously critical. They were dragged out on sleds. They could not stand. While rescue was going on, I went home and got piles of blankets etc so I was ready for them. Breeze and Wink are doing well. Yummy is not. Her temp started at 91.4/R180/P210. Her gums were pale and her mucous was sticky. I am fortunate to have a wonderful friend, Dr. Lindsay Merkle DVM, with me all the way. She has a college friend who wrote the protocol for Hypothermic warming in canines. Needless to say, it was who I needed. The 1AM update is: Breeze: Temp continues to rise. She is up on her feet and drinking, able to swallow. She has peed. No blood. Her color is good. Just exhausted. Wink: Little Warden is also in her feet but very stiff. Her temp is also rising consistently. She drank a little water and peed but prefers to still be under the warmed blankets. Yummy is receiving Karo syrup for energy. We are doing a Core Warming protocol which is very specific. She is lethargic not even able to hold her head up. She had a terrible moaning when breathing which has since stopped. We are concerned about bleeding with her and are watching carefully. She is currently in a stupor but she does respond to me. Obviously we will be having a few long days. I have help coming tomorrow if the roads are passable. We have freezing sleet since this afternoon and still going with rain and sleet tomorrow. A few things I do know: Our dogs were able to survive because they were in good shape and had muscle to produce heat. Their dew claws are bloody, which is how they held onto the ice for so long. And, I have been accused of having a very large, overkill dog triage bag. Well, tonight, I am thankful that I had everything in the bag that the Vet asked for. My girls would not be here right now if we didnt have this equipment and supplies that I know we need out here. Thank you all for your prayers. I will update again tomorrow. Please continue to pray for Yummy. She is Nonniks daughter, so I know she can fight. Please share this to the pages where you have posted. Thank you all! ***************************************************************************************** 630AM UPDATE: Breeze and Wink seem to be doing well. We will watch for frostbite especially on their ears and paws. They will start getting 1/4 meal rations until we make sure their guts are moving but both girls have good bowel sound and lungs seem clear. They are peeing and the color is good. Yummy: Her temp is up to 95. She continues to be Tachycardic. We are watching for her to crash, which is common. As she warms, her heart rate can also drop and be extremely slow. I have not heard any gut sounds yet. Her labored breathing has stopped but her respirations are still fast. Her coor is better. A pale pink as compared to almost white last night. We have eye lube in to protect them. We are still suctioning her as you do a newborn. We roll her from side to side when we change towels and she did drain water from her ears but they are dry now and no other fluid is coming from them. She is on a saline nebulizer and we continue with the warmed towels. The Hypothermic protocol is to wrap her core but that was causing her stress, so I cut off the ends of 2 queen flannel pillowcases and we slipped that over her body and layer the towels in there. We have 1 last bag of fluids but are holding on that. She has already had 2 bags but we would like her to pee now. I do have some help coming today. Mel had to go to bed. He is exhausted and feeling guilty about the open gate. Oh, and did I mention that all 5 of our girls are in season and Jack is providing a concert because of all the excitement. And of course, there is my job and so many families I need to get Christmas stuff too. Thank you Martha Anderson for listening and reassuring. When we first got them out and I couldnt get ahold of any Vet, you were there on the other end to reassure me I had all the bases covered. It was very overwhelming to have 3 in such need at once. I am so glad you answered that phone. And, thank you all for your continued prayers.
