UPDATE ON SONYA: The tracheotomy is complete and successful! The procedure was done this morning and Sonya is recovering. The past few days have been very positive for Sonya. Yesterday, 2 liters of fluid were removed from around her lungs. Her left lung is doing much better, as it was collapsed and it appears that this lung is now re-inflated! Also accomplished was a lumbar procedure which will help the doctors determine what the abscess in her brain is comprised of. A MRI revealed that the infection on her brain has enlarged slightly. The infection has built a wall around itself in that area. While this is troubling, once composition matter has been determined- it is hopeful that medicine can be applied through the spine that will travel past this barricade and attack the infection from the brain side. Her general health is increasing positively. She will spend today recovering and tomorrow the plan is to begin waking her and see how she responds. Now that the tubes are no longer running down her throat she will be much more comfortable. The doctor told me that our next goal is to have her completely off the ventilator. It is a slow process, but our girl is winning.
