UPDATE ON TOM....It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you Toms short stay at home didnt work out. Yesterday, he was again admitted to the hospital, most likely caused by an adverse reaction to medication. he was in tremendous pain, was slurring his words, was very lethargic, and nearly unresponsive. The paramedics thought he may be having another stroke, but after evaluation at the hospital, it was determined that was not the case. the only thing we can figure out is that on Tuesday of this week he was prescribed 4 additional medications, on top of the 10 he was already on, and there was a bad reaction from one of the new meds. Hes still in the hospital, and his occupational therapist there recommended that he be reinstated to long term care. After many tears, and lots of thought, we both agreed this was a bigger issue than we could solve by ourselves. Tom is complete and total care. He has to be changed 4-5 times during the night, and I have to have the ability to lift him when he cant lift himself, which is impossible by the bruises I have all over my legs and arms. we gave it our very best, but it just wasnt working. However, I have found him a WONDERFUL care facility that spent 2 hours today with me going over what they had to offer Tom. Its a much larger facility, much more run by professionals that his previous place that seemed to be run like a fraternity. Its large, well equipped, well run, with very high standards. They addressed with me every single issue Tom has, and assured me that they are more than qualified to not only take care of him, but keep him happy. Tom is agreeable, although sad that we cant live together any more. We both will be fine, but the transition is sad for us. I will still see him every day, and he will get to come home often for visits. What we need now is time, again, to adjust.
