UPDATE: RAINFOREST SUMMIT DEMONSTRATION ON NOVEMBER 12 IN SYDNEY Let’s tell the Government to Aim Higher on Rainforest Protection Hi all, The demonstration to be held outside the Asia Pacific Rainforest Summit on November 12 is gathering momentum. Lets create a buzz on the streets of Sydney that cant be ignored by leaders inside the summit, like Julie Bishop, Greg Hunt and government ministers from our Asia Pacific region. Joining us will be a number of passionate advocates for the forests, including radio presenter and journalist Julie McCrossin, and singer Tom Trelawney. Campaigners from Papua New Guinea and representatives from SumOfUs, the Wilderness Society, and the Nature Conservation Council of NSW will be there. Weve invited leaders from the three major political parties. WHAT TO WEAR: Come as you are, or wear something with bright rainforest colours. If you can manage it, feathers, flowers, hats, boas or colourful scarves would not be out of place. WHAT TO BRING: You dont need to bring anything – well have some materials- but feel free to bring signs and placards if you like. Messages like Rainforest Protection begins at home, will work, or simply the name of your favourite forest. Pictures of birds and animals, puppets or even animal costumes would add to the visual drama. Well take photos on the day as well as a video, and invite the media along. HELP WANTED: If there is someone who can use our hand held HD video camera to take footage, it would help greatly. Please email and let me know. People to hand out flyers and get petitions signed will be needed too - we’ll ask you on the day. Already 75% of Australia’s rainforests have been cleared for agriculture, mining and urban development. They now cover only 0.5% of the continent. Yet not even all of that small percentage is safe. Now is the time for our leaders to take a stand for real protection, not a half-hearted solution that will pander to loggers, miners and developers. What is left of our forests and wildlife are too precious to lose. SEE YOU THERE!
