UPDATE: The lightning-ignited Cottonwood Fire was first reported at about 1:45 p.m., today (Thursday, July 3). The approximately 1,000-acre fire is located about 15 miles southeast of Pioche. It is burning in sagebrush and heavy pinion-juniper. Aerial resources are dropping retardant to protect historic mining structures. Firefighters, meantime, made progress on the other Lincoln County wildfire – tying in the west and northwest flanks of the Middle Ridge Fire that today grew to an estimated 9,500 acres. The lightning-ignited fire began as the Middle Ridge and Dot fires, which this morning merged and burned into Beaver Dam State Park. The BLM is providing structure protection, as needed. The federal agency is being assisted by the Lincoln County Fire Protection District, Nevada Division of Forestry, Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands; and Forest Service. The Billy Panagopoulos Type 3 Incident Management Team is expected tomorrow to assume management of the fire that is consuming sagebrush and scattered pinion-juniper. In White Pine County, the Lages Fire today grew to about 3,000 acres. The fire, located near Lages Junction about 50 miles north of Ely, is approximately 60-percent contained. It is consuming sagebrush and isolated pinion-juniper. No structures are threatened but the fire is burning in sage-grouse habitat, as well as into the Becky Peak Wilderness. Fire line critical to the protection of sage-grouse habitat is holding as of this evening.
