UPDATE: We would like to announce that we have a tentative agreement with a properly licensed and suitable home for the deer that has been living in a home in Genesee County for the past five years. The Detroit Zoo, a world-class institution dedicated to the improving and protecting the conservation of wildlife and the welfare of animals, has responded to our request to provide a home for the deer pending disease testing results. The deer first will be tested for bovine tuberculosis, along with parasites and viruses that are common to white-tailed deer. It is standard procedure for all new animals at the Detroit Zoo to undergo pre-acceptance health screening to prevent the introduction of diseases to the zoo’s other animals. Tests will take approximately two weeks to process, and this is a tentative agreement until the test results are back. The Detroit Zoo, located in Royal Oak, Michigan, is accredited nationally by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. As part of the mandatory accreditation process, AZA members meet rigorous professional standards for animal welfare, veterinary care, wildlife conservation, scientific research, education, expert staffing and safety. Detroit Zoo veterinary staff members are working with the DNR to set up the testing. If tests indicate the deer is healthy, plans will be made for her move to the zoo. Again, we want to thank the Detroit Zoo, Zoo Director Ron Kagan and staff for their willingness to work with us on this. More details: bit.ly/19QgEqC
