UPDATE: Youth Summit Continues COLONIA, Yap (OurYAP, July 09, 2014) — The 2014 Yap State Youth Summit continues, after its inaugural opening on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Yap Small Business Development Center (Yap SBDC). The Summit will run the whole week, from Monday to Friday, July 11, 2014. The first day of the Summit focused on orientation—familiarizing the youth clubs with each other and OurYAP, the umbrella organization for the Yap State youth. Also on Monday were presentations from the Yap State Scholarship Office and the Upward Bound Program. On Tuesday, newer youth groups introduced themselves to the Summit, followed by a presentation from the Yap youth delegation to the Pacific Heritage Youth Summit—a conference to be held in Guam from July 13 – 16, 2014. At 10:30 AM, a representative from the Fisheries & Maritime Institute (FMI) of the College of Micronesia – FSM (COM-FSM) made a presentation on FMI’s programs to the gathered youth. After a lunch break, the Summit moved from the Yap SBDC to the Yap Sports Complex in the afternoon for a tree-planting project. Participating youths planted tree saplings beside the Sports Complex Gymnasium Building, before returning back to the Yap SBDC conference room for the next day’s schedule review and the day’s recess. On Wednesday of the Youth Summit, the morning session included a workshop conducted by Timothy Ruda, President of the FSM National Youth Council and member of OurYAP. The workshop covered capacity building for youth clubs within Yap, followed by an activities session where participating youth clubs prepared presentations. In the afternoon, a grant-writing presentation was provided by Sean Gaarad and Rachael Nash of the Yap ORG. After several more presentations in continuation from the mornings workshop, the Summit recessed for the day, to be continued in the next day. The Thursday session of the Summit will mainly focus on sports workshops, and discussions on OurYAP’s next Board and Officers.
