UPDATE on My Mom: I went to the hospital this morning and found Mom awake, the breathing tube had been removed from her throat and only a feeding tube remained with oxygen tubing under her nose. My immediate reaction was joy, her color looked so much better as I sat down beside her and held her hand. I realized she couldnt talk to me, but she was attentive and acknowledged my questions with a nod or a shake of her head. After sitting with her for a few moments and noting the readings on her monitor I decided to check in with her nurse. Her nurse was very to the point, she answered all of my questions with real facts and she was so direct and honest it was almost like talking to a man. (no offense ladies, but sometimes it seems the female nurses try to be kind and hold back any negative stuff). Anyway, the SICU nurse said Mom is actually worse today. I was taken aback, I asked why she said that. I mean, heres Mom, breathing on her own, oxygen level at 94, B.P. 130/68, and not taking any pain meds at all. She cant swallow after having been intubated but hey, her color looked good. The nurse explained that the early Pneumonia diagnosis was most likely incorrect, and that the Heart Doctors on her case now are certain that as evidenced by the enzymes found in Moms blood, and the fluid in her lungs, she definitely had respiratory failure due to Congestive Heart failure. It gets worse, her heart is at 20% efficiency and will NOT get better, even now that her Kidneys are operating almost normally. (The Kidney doctor told me yesterday if he could get her kidneys working that would aid in getting the fluid out of her lungs). Apparently, the fluid is still there or continues to pump back in due to the problems with Moms heart. Long ago, as a youth she had Rheumatic fever that left her with an irregular heartbeat. (and obviously some heart damage) Never a problem until now, but with age, the heart/valves are not operating the way theyre supposed to and some blood is actually backwashing into her lungs. Her heart actually flutters, instead of pumping. This of course makes the oxygen transfer process in her lungs very difficult and her whole body including of course the heart and major organs, dont get the oxygen or ENERGY they need to function properly. Sort of Double trouble. Please keep her in your Prayers, Mom is a fighter and with Gods help, if that be His Will, she will pull through. Im praying for a miracle.
