UPDATED 8:30 AM EDT, November 1, 2013 UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Andrew Rosenthal A strong cold front is racing toward the Eastern Seaboard this morning, bringing vicious winds and waves of showers this morning. The stormy weather will be short-lived, with calmer and drier weather returning for the weekend. The weather is thanks to a strong area of low pressure crossing the Great Lakes this morning. Coupled with high pressure off the East Coast, the pressure gradient between these two weather systems is leading to strong winds. At the same time, the jet stream - a ribbon of strong winds aloft - is drawn into the system, increasing further the magnitude of the strong winds that are slamming the surface. Most of the wind is concentrated in a line of gusty storms that are making its ways across the I-95 corridor this morning. 30 to 40 mph gusts, with a few 50 mph gust mixed in, have been common with this activity this morning. While some weakening is expected this morning as the storms make their way through the Mid-Atlantic and off the East Coast, gusts of 40 to 50 mph are still possible before the rain moves into southern New England. Although there has not been any lightning, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for eastern Pennsylvania, northwest New Jersey. This includes Philadelphia. The Mid-Atlantic isn`t alone in feeling the effects of this storm. As the low pressure center marches through southern Canada, strong winds will also buffet much of New England and the interior Northeast, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph expected along with gusts that could reach up to 60 mph. Similarly, areas at higher elevations are able to tap into the strong winds, and could also see gusts of 40 to 50 mph. For this reason, Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings stretch from the mountains of northwest Virginia and eastern West Virginia to New England. The strongest winds will be found along the shores of Lake Ontario in New York and in Maine. The winds have been vicious since Thursday afternoon as the activity moved eastward. A semi-truck overturned late Thursday evening on Interstate 75 near Miamisburg, Ohio, injuring its driver. Power poles were knocked over in Muncie, Ind., Thursday evening by a 75 mph gust. A WeatherBug Live Tracking Station at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va., reported a gust of 55 mph, while one at 3,500-feet elevation on Wintergreen Mountain, Va., saw a gust of 74 mph. The good news is that the stormy weather will be short-lived. The cold front will sweep off the coast by this evening, with calmer weather building in behind. A large upper-level trough will lead to plenty of clouds, with scattered lake-effect showers along the shores of the Great Lakes this weekend.
