(UPDATED 9:05 p.m.) Fatalities from Yolanda, the strongest typhoon ever to hit the Philippines, has climbed to 3,974 as of 12 noon Sunday, the country’s disaster relief agency said. An additional 1,186 remain missing and 12,544 have been hurt when the typhoon made landfall, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. In his report to NDRRMC, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II said retrieval teams hauled Saturday 780 bodies more in Tacloban City. However, the NDRRMC failed to indicate in its updated report whether the death count given by Roxas was already included. Of the newly retrieved bodies, only 48 were indentified. The bodies were retrieved from Barangay San Jose near the Tacloban airport to Barangay Fatima and Barangay Pampango, areas that were hit by tsunami-like storm surges. In a report by the “Task Force Cadaver” operating in the city, 1,199 bodies have so far retrieved, of which 1,095 have yet to be identified while 147 have been identified. Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said the total cost of damages so far reported was P10.3 billion (P1.2 billion in infrastructure and P9 billion on agriculture) in Regions IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, and CARAGA. In agriculture, P2.4 billion in rice, P226.9 million in corn and P1.9 billion in high value crops. At least 543,127 houses (272,087 totally/271,040 partially) were damaged. Yolanda has affected more than 10 million people.
