URBAN LEGEND? A co-worker circulated an email in our office last week warning about a new traffic radar system, installed in the “guardrails” alongside the elevated portion of the interstate over the Atchafalaya, between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. The email warned that the new hidden radar system would be able to take a photo of your speeding car and then email the pic to a patrol car that would be waiting a few miles down the road to pull you over and issue a citation. Apparently this email has been so widely circulated all over south Louisiana, that a local news station contacted the LA State Police headquarters requesting information about the new radar system. State Police responded with the following: "LSP has received several inquiries about a guardrail speed detection device being utilized on I-10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. This is NOT TRUE". Troopers said the story circulating the Internet about the guardrail radar system is the "latest and greatest" urban legend.
