URBAN PLANNING (POSTGRADUATE) OVERVIEW Professional urban planners play a critical role in shaping our urban environments – economically, environmentally, socially and culturally, having a significant impact on the factors that influence our lives. Studying urban planning will give you the strategic urban planning knowledge and skills required for professional practice to confront the even increasingly challenging urban context we live within. AREAS OF STUDY The School of Architecture and Planning offers a broad range of subjects within Urban Planning, including urban design, urban planning law, policy-making and decision making, community and economic development, Māori perspectives, cultural planning, and infrastructure provision. You can study Urban Planning (postgraduate) in the following programmes: • Master of Planning (MPlan) • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - Creative Arts and Industries • Master of Urban Planning (MUrbPlan) WHAT YOU WILL LEARN You will gain the skills and knowledge to become effective urban planning practitioners, in areas including: policy formulation and implementation, urban sustainability, urban design, urban economics, social and cultural matters and infrastructure design. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The global trend of population movement from the rural to the urban environment now has over 50% of the world’s population living in cities. In New Zealand the figure is higher, with 85% of the population currently living in our cities and towns. With these pressures on our environment there is a real need for graduates with the strategic urban planning knowledge and skills to confront this increasingly challenging urban context. The possibilities for graduating urban planners include employment opportunities within central and local government, community groups, Iwi authorities, NGOs and private practice. Our graduates are currently working throughout New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific, the UK, Australia and North America.
