URGENT Appeal for the Poor House of Anse-a-Galets, La Gonave Island, Haiti The Poor House in Anse-a-Galets is the only refuge on La Gonave Island for the destitute, the frail elderly and helpless people. They go there because there is simply nowhere else to turn. Those who are physically able to, beg on the streets for money or scraps of food. Those who cannot even manage that due to ill health or disability rely completely on the goodwill of others for food. There is no medical care for them and simple diseases are not treated, infections spread quickly throughout the residents and the elderly are already compromised as they are very underweight and malnourished. The water supply is untreated and causes vomiting and diarrhea. The building is small, overcrowded, the walls are crumbling dangerously and the roof offers no protection in the rainy season. There are only beds for about half of the residents, the rest sleep on rags on the ground. These are people who have no families to take care of them. ASHOG is appealing for help in order to build a new home for the destitute people of Anse-a-Galets. Even the smallest contribution will help. ASHOG is planning to build a new home for these people and others in the same situation. While ASHOG is already fundraising with concerts and appeals, the local population is mostly poor and can help very little. Even $20 from you - or more if you can manage it - would go a long way to getting the foundations done and allow for volunteers to begin work. Can you volunteer? Are you an architect? A builder?
