URGENT NEWS-Indonesian military make illegal incursion into Papua New Guinea, Belden Namah describes it as an act of war. We have received reports that on the 18 of January the Indonesian military with 2 military helicopters made an illegal incursion across the Papua New Guinea border and touched down at Bewani River and Kiriku village in Sandaun (West Sepik) Province. On Sunday morning intelligence was received from a source describing an ‘Emergency Situation long Border’. The source said ‘This morning at 6 am two helicopters from the Indonesian army dropped off Indonesian soldiers at the Bewani River and all the local people ran away into the bush (jungle), making the situation very panicked. Vanimo-Green MP Hon. Belden Namah, who is from Bewani, after being asked to confirm the intelligence report advised: “I checked home and confirmed that YES Indonesian military helicopters did fly over Skotchio and Bewani.” Belden Namah, who has spoken out a number of times in support of the West Papuan Freedom Struggle said: “Our successive governments have been insensitive of the issues on the PNG/Indonesian border. Successive governments have turned a blind eye on plight of PNGeans living along the border especially their security and welfare. There is also no clear policy on our Melanesian brothers and sisters (West Papuans). We watch ignorantly as they are being slaughtered and massacred by the merciless Indonesians.” When asked how he felt about the report that Indonesians illegally entered his ‘home turf’, Belden Namah, who technically is still the Leader of the PNG Opposition until such a time the election of a new Opposition Leader is ‘recognised by the parliament’, said “I am very furious. This is an act of war. Who are they to continue this act of intimidation? This MUST STOP!!!” “If I was the PM, I will sever their ties and close down their Embassy and consulate in PNG and deport their ambassador.” According to another source, the soldiers and helicopters have now left PNG after all the people in the villages fled into the jungle. However, yesterday it was believed that at least 6 soldiers still remained, close to Bewani River. This news has been reported to us by local Papua New Guineans. This is a developing and very dangerous situation. We will keep you updated as we receive more information.
