US Ambassador to Afghanistan Meets Dr. Abdullah Abdullah On May 31, 2014 the US Ambassador to Afghanistan, James Cunningham, met with leading Afghan presidential candidate, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah. At the meeting, which took place at the residence of Dr. Abdullah, the two sides discussed a wide-range of issues, including the recent announcement by the US President Barack Obama on the future presence of US forces in Afghanistan during post-2014 Afghanistan. In that regard, Ambassador Cunningham reaffirmed the United States’ continued support for the training, advising, assisting and equipping of Afghan national security forces (ANSF). Such support would take place on the basis of the US-Afghanistan Enduring Strategic Partnership Agreement of May 2012, and text of the bilateral security agreement (BSA) to be signed by the next President of Afghanistan. It was also mentioned the text of the bilateral security agreement would not be amended. Dr. Abdullah expressed gratitude for the steadfast support of the United States of America for Afghanistan over the past thirteen years, and underscored that the next Government of Afghanistan would continue to be faced with security, economic other challenges. In that regard, he emphasized the importance of the international community’s long-term support for Afghanistan as essential for ensuring a durable peace, and stability in the country.
