US-LED COALITION LAUNCHES MORE AIRSTRIKES AGAINST IS ------------------------------------------- The U.S. Central Command says it has conducted some 23 airstrikes in Syria -- 13 of which were aimed at the extremist fighters near Kobani. The city has been surrounded by the Sunni insurgents for more than 50 days -- with weeks of airstrikes failing to break their grip. With no end in sight, Washington is hoping Kurdish peshmerga fighters will help stop Islamic State militants from establishing a caliphate in northern Iraq and Syria. Meanwhile, media have been awash with rumors that IS leader was killed or injured in the US-led air strikes near the Iraqi city of Mosul. ISI on the other hand, had implied an independent emirate that could perhaps be subsumed into the long-term global project of al-Qaeda.
