US Navy SEAL Team 6 shoots more ammunition in a single year than the entire Marine Corps. I read this sentence probably for the first time around 2005/6 in Chuck Pfarrers brilliant memoir - Warrior Soul. I thought mostly it was an urban legend, Spartans-feel-no-pain kind of mythos which usually gets built around most special forces units around the world. However, I am beginning to believe that this statement might have some merit. Before you even contemplate the gravity of this factoid you need to understand a few numbers. There are a total of anywhere like 2,500- 2,800 active duty Navy SEALS at any given point in time, of these the ST6 or DEVGRU, or whatever its called now, comprises of only 500-600 operators. The Marine Corps on the other hand has anywhere between 2,00,000 - 2,25,000 soldiers not counting the 40,000-50,000 or so reservists. The Marine Corps are as good as any standing army gets in most places in the world, they do have SF units, youve got Force Recon, MARSOC etc, and they do put a hellish amount of ordnance downrange. And on that note Ill introduce you to Professor Crooke. You know the thing with fellows like Pfarrer and Crooke is that they are eternally happy characters, they just exude energy like the Sun on a summer morning, they dont come across as some of the Navy Seals who sound more like Darth Vader or Bane..
