USA : Ph.D. Position - Department of Computer Science and Engineering Oakland University The Doctoral program in Computer Science and Informatics at Oakland Uni¬versity is designed to prepare students for leadership careers in research and education in computer science and interdisciplinary work using computer science. The doctoral admits students both for part-time and full-time study. The entire program must be completed in seven Calendar years regardless of whether the student is full-time or part-time. The department offers two streams of specialization within the Computer Sci¬ence and Informatics program. • Computer Science • Software and Information Technology The Computer Science stream is designed for students intending to pursue research in the core areas of computer science with a theoretical focus. TheSoftware and Information Technology stream is designed for students intending to pursue research in the applied areas of interdisciplinary computing and information technology. The program is designed for students with academic backgrounds in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Information Tech¬nology. Applicants who hold or are about to obtain a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in these disciplines are eligible to apply. Applicants with academic degrees in other disciplines and wishing to pursue interdisciplinary research may pursue the Software and Information Technology stream after gaining proficiency by completing supplemental course work. Research Activities and Research Facilities The department has 18 faculty members participating in departmental research groups in the following areas: artificial intelligence,web service and cloud computing, DSP and embedded system, bioinformatics and biomedical image processing, data and knowledge management, programming language, image and video analysis, indexing and retrieval, mobile computing, networksand information security, and software engineering. Each group involves undergraduate and graduate students in its research efforts. The department endeavors to provide a working environment fostering excellence in research, with a particular view towards expertise in problem areas requiring a multi-disciplinary approach including computer science. Research opportunities for computer science students also exist in some of the multi-departmental research areas that include computer science faculty such as bioinformatics, healthcare information system, web-based application, networking and information assurance, and computer-aided engineering and manufacturing design. The department’s research labs, located within the buildings of the School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS), are fully equipped with computers and special-purpose instrumentation. The research support infrastructure includes a departmental and school wide system administration staff and high-speed access to Internet. Research Funding and Grant Our faculty’s research projects have been funded by NSF, NIH. Beaumont Hospital, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Army Research Laboratory, NASA, Navy Research Laboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, Ford Motor, GM Motors, Chrysler LLC. And Private IT Companies Degree Requirements For coursework for students holding a M.S. degree, a minimum of 48 credit hours of graduate courses is required for the degree, including 24 credit hours of dissertation research. For students holding a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of 80 credit hours of graduate courses are required for the degree, including 24 credit hours of dissertation research. The degree requirements also include successful completion of five milestones: qualifying courses, core exam, a written and oral candidacy exam, a dissertationproposal exam, and a dissertation defense. Financial Aid The Department has a number of teaching and research assistantships available for its full-time students. In 2012-13, the starting stipend for assistants was approximately $18,000 for the nine month period (September-May), as well as tuition remission for up toeight credit hours per term. Summer employment opportunities also exist. The University encourages students to explore and apply for external and internal fellowships, scholarships, and grants, some of which are described at the Oakland University and School of Engineering and Computer Science web sites. The department currently has approximately 30 supported full-time students in its graduate program. Application Procedures Those interested may apply on-line without application fee at the Oakland University Graduate Admissions website. Applications must include transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate coursework, the GRE examination scores, two letters of recommendation, a personal essay, and, for international students, the TOEFL score. The results of the GRE subject examination in computer science are not required, but are helpful. Successful applicants will show outstanding potential for excellence in computer science research. Application Deadlines Before an applicant’s file can be reviewed for full program admission, all application documents must be received in Graduate Study and Lifelong Learning by the semester deadlines listed below. Incomplete applications will not be sent to departments for admission review. • July 15 for fall semester • November 15 for winter semester • March 15 for summer semester International application deadlines International applications are reviewed for fall and winter admission only. To ensure adequate time for review, international applications must be completed at least six months before the desired date of intended enrollment in the University. All international application materials must be submitted by May 1 for fall admission and by September 1 for winter admission.
