USA Today had the following disturbing report: DETROIT — Thousands of Muslims from across the U.S. are headed to Detroit this weekend for one of the biggest Islamic conventions in North America, a four-day event at which they will discuss the future of their community and faith in America. Kicking off Friday, the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) has already stoked controversy, drawing attacks from some conservatives who say the event is organized by an extremist group with ties to terror organizations — a claim strongly rejected by ISNA. . . . . In 2009, a federal judge in Texas, Jorge Antonio Solis, ruled in a case involving a Muslim charity, Holy Land for Relief and Development, that the government has produced ample evidence to establish the associations of ISNA and other groups with Hamas. The Justice Department had labeled ISNA as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case against the charity, which was linked to Hamas. The judges ruling also cited a 1991 memo that listed ISNA as a Muslim Brotherhood organization. In the land of freedom of speech, one can hardly fault people for gathering to celebrate their culture and point of view. However, in light of the situation in the world currently, it is more than a little confusing to see the support for the event by people who ought to know better. According to USA Today, former President Jimmy Carter and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will be addressing the event. I also noted from the event program published by ISNA that Evangelical Lutheran Church of America presiding bishop Elizabeth Eaton is slated to speak. Interestingly, King Abdullah was cited this morning warning that the jihadists will be in the west within a month unless there is “rapid action.” One can almost understand President Carter speaking at such an event, given his support for causes over the last couple of decades. But, what would prompt the leader of a major Christian denomination from taking part in such an event? I am just a dumb old guy, but it feels pretty good to be Lutheran Church MISSOURI SYNOD about now. I’m glad that my denomination has enough common sense not to be co-opted by such things. Discernment does not seem to be a readily available commodity in this century. Lord have mercy.
