USE OF LOW CARBOHYDRATE (low carb) DIETS IN PATIENTS TYPE 2 - TopicsExpress

USE OF LOW CARBOHYDRATE (low carb) DIETS IN PATIENTS TYPE 2 DIABETES Patients with type 2 diabetes in my surgery population are being increasingly advised to adhere to low carb diets...there have been some individuals who have seen very impressive results and even in one case reversing the need for insulin and having a weight loss of over 30% in 12 months... But what is the evidence for this intervention? Does it work in all patients with type 2 diabetes? Interestingly - there is evidence from one study that a low-carbohydrate but non calorie restricted diet resulted in improved glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The implication of this is that by just changing proportions of carbohydrate in the diet without restricting calories - there is evidence of benefit in patients with type two diabetes...very interesting stuff...
