USEFUL TIPS ON SKIN FRICTION: For bored piles many engineers tend to neglect the skin friction because the actual skin friction will depend on various factors (the most important of those is Soil Set-up). If the bored pile construction methods used by the specific contractor is well known and if some piles of that contractor at the specific site can be subjected to pile load tests using PDA, one can estimate the percentage of the skin friction that may be developed around the pile against the theoretical skin friction calculations. For flyovers and bridges one may have to be very careful in deriving the skin frictions for bored piles. If sufficient reliable laboratory test results are available one can compute the end bearing at different depths of soils. It is not necessary the pile tip to be on a rock surface. Always check the soils to a depth equal to design pile tip depth plus 3 times the pile diameter.
