USELESS DEBATE Last night’s debate was a mainly a waste of time because one of the two main contenders was missing, and also because: • It was not structured as a political debate should be - to bring out opposing perspectives, arguments and controversy in a contest between adversaries; • Questions were based on broad areas of government activity instead of demanding ideas on specific controversial issues; • Participants were able to recite their party pieces and not required to debate with each other; • Three hours was far too long. Because of the above, all candidates seemed much the same because the format did not demand a comparison between them. HH was particularly boring with his flat ‘economic manager’ argument. Nawakwi and Sinkamba showed glimpses of being more interesting and imaginative. So Lungu needn’t have been so scared of appearing, since the format didn’t require the cut and thrust of debate that might have exposed his deficiencies.
