USET Tribal Leaders, Economic Development Directors, Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, Emergency Management, and Information Technology personnel Save the Date for: FCC ONAP ANNOUNCES TRIBAL NATION TRAINING AND CONSULTATION WORKSHOP WITH USET, INC., AT MUSIC CITY CENTER, SEPTEMBER 15-17, 2014 FCC Tribal Broadband, Telecom, and Broadcast Training and Consultation Workshop to be held on September 15-17, 2014, at the Music City Center in Nashville, TN Hosted by the FCC Office of Native Affairs and Policy and held in coordination with the United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. REGISTER NOW -- COMPLIMENTARY REGISTRATION FOR TRIBAL NATIONS IS NOW OPEN The FCC’s Office of Native Affairs and Policy (ONAP), Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, announces the date of the next in a series of regional workshops and consultation sessions aimed at training and assisting Tribal Nations in developing more robust broadband, telecommunications, and broadcast infrastructure to serve those living on Tribal lands. It will be conducted at the Music City Center at 201 5th Ave S, Nashville, TN, 37203, on September 15-17, 2014. A preliminary agenda will be made available at fcc.gov/native. While there is no block of hotel rooms reserved for this workshop, several hotels near the Music City Center still have vacancies. We encourage you to make reservations as soon as possible. The two and a half day program will involve sessions on September 16-17 on a wide range of important programs and policies that support the deployment of communications infrastructures. These infrastructures support Tribal economic development, Tribal schools and libraries, low-income families, and health care clinics, as well as Tribal radio stations, public safety departments, and Tribal government administrations. A separate session also will be held by ONAP and the FCC’s Infrastructure Team for Tribal cultural preservation officials. This session will focus on implementation of the Positive Train Control Program Comment as well as multiple FCC cultural preservation Tribal consultation priorities for the coming year. These priorities include improving the FCC’s Section 106 review process for new, smaller wireless technology infrastructure, as well as potential solutions for existing towers constructed without Section 106 review, while recognizing harms caused by failure to perform the review. On the afternoon of September 15, 2014, we will also hold a “Communications 101” orientation session from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This orientation session is for Tribal officials, governmental managers, and enterprise specialists who are new to the subject of telecommunications, broadband, and broadcast media. This session is oriented towards how the will cover key basic communications concepts including: • An explanation of broadband and how broadband technology works; • Spectrum, including wireless networks; • Broadcast media terminology; • Federal government programs and subsidy mechanisms that support the deployment, sustainability, and affordability of communications services on Tribal lands; and • An overview of the FCC rulemaking process.
