USO SHOW TO CAP KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ~ 108th Annual Independence Day Parade Memories of Bob Hope and the Andrews Sisters will fill the hall of Archbishop John Hughes Council #481 at the conclusion of the Long Island Assembly #703, 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus Independence Day Parade on Saturday, June 29th, 2013. Marchers in the parade will be entertained by the USO Show Troupe, The Liberty Belles, who will recall the era of camp shows out in the field and aboard ship during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and as recently as today’s hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their appearance will mark another ‘first’ for this year’s parade! They are Broadway and Off-Broadway professionals who entertain at VA hospitals and deployment and homecoming ceremonies. The 108th Annual Independence Day Parade will step off at Noon on Saturday, June 29th, and march up 13th Avenue from 71st Street to 86th Street. A number of bands, classic cars, various Councils of the Knights of Columbus and community and youth groups will once again celebrate our nation’s heritage, led by Color Guards from all the military services. A brief awards ceremony and program, featuring the presentation of the Order’s “Pro Patria Award” to Msgr. Jamie Gigantiello, Vicar for Development of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, Pastor of St. Bernard’s Parish in Mill Basin, Brooklyn, Chaplain for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission and the Columbian Association of New York, and the Host of a cooking show on the NET Diocesan Cable Television Channel will follow. This year’s Parade Grand Marshal is Sir Knight Richard T. (Rick) Kenney a member of Lexington Council #293 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn since 1967. He is a Past Grand Knight, Former District Deputy and Former New York State Pro-Life Chairman. A Marine Corps Veteran, he spent a life in public service as a civilian with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. He has also served as Executive Director of the New York Council of the Navy League and as a Consultant with the Xavier Society for the Blind.
