USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum On December 12, 1862, the USS Cairo was sunk by a torpedo that had been planted in the Yazoo River by the Confederates. The Cairo remained beneath the muddy waters of the Yazoo River for 102 years before she was finally raised and eventually restored. When divers first entered the remains of the Cairo, they found that she was in time capsule form. Her guns were still loaded and ready for firing, and the sailors personal possessions were left just as they had been left on the fateful day.
