UTLA: District can do better at the bargaining table; union leaders approve $3 million for escalating actions UTLA ‘s organizing efforts appear to be pushing the District in the right direction, but its new offer of a 4% salary increase for educators doesn’t go far enough to compensate educators who not only have not had a raise in 8 years, but who also took cuts through furlough days. UTLA believes LAUSD can afford more given the improved economy and the Governor’s recent budget proposal with major funding increases for education. UTLA is asking for a 9% increase so the District won’t lose quality educators to other, better paying districts; and to attract educators to LAUSD. UTLA has also made proposals to reduce class sizes but the District has yet to bring a counterproposal to the table. UTLA is also calling for full staffing to support the instructional and socio-emotional needs of students. At today’s bargaining session, there was continued discussion on ending the 4 level observation teacher evaluation system the District unilaterally imposed. PERB (Public Employment Relations Board) recently found that the District’s action was illegal. UTLA’s House of Representatives, the union’s governing body, tonight approved a motion to move $3 million dollars into an organizing fund to prepare for escalating actions as negotiations with the District continue. The money was held in a reserve “strike fund” and the time has come to start using that money for organizing actions such as our massive rally scheduled for February 26th at Pershing Square. With millions now in our organizing fund, UTLA would be in a position to strike if necessary.
