UTech President (Acting) Responds to Student Protest Ambassador the Hon. Burchell Whiteman, OJ, President (Acting), University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), today met with the leadership of the University’s Students’ Union and other members of senior management to address concerns raised by the student body during a demonstration today on the Papine campus. The students raised concerns about issues related to adequate physical facilities and the current payment policy for tuition fees. Ambassador Whiteman noted that the meeting with the student leadership was “very productive and steps are being taken to deal with all the concerns.” Extension of Deadline for Payment of Fees The Acting President said that arising from the meeting, the decision was taken to maintain the 80:20 ratio arrangement of a minimum of 80% of the total tuition cost for modules selected. This will facilitate the students’ registration for both tuition and the sitting of examinations. The payment deadline was extended by two weeks from September 30, 2014 to October 15, 2014. He noted that the University’s administration would continue to accommodate special individual cases to facilitate the completion of registration and encouraged students to register for the number of modules that they can afford. Ambassador Whiteman emphasized that the University has been very sensitive to the economic plight of its students and the payment plan currently being offered provides the best option for the University to meet its obligations to the entire student body and to ensure that students are registered to sit their examinations. The Acting President noted further that he would welcome continued “constructive consultation and dialogue” with the Students’ Union so that issues can be appropriately addressed.
