UUP - flip-flopping but no answers East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton has said the UUP conference was packed with flip-flops but little else. Commenting Mr Newton said, “The DUP stands for strengthening unionism. We want unionists to work together. We want to maximise the pro-union vote in Northern Ireland. That’s why it was disappointing that the UUP conference dedicated so much time to attacking fellow unionists. Through unionism working together, the most recent elections saw one of the highest ever pro-union turnouts with the turnout for nationalist and republican parties on the wane. Repeated attacks on fellow unionists at the UUP conference only serves to strengthen the enemies of the Union. Whilst the UUP strategy may have been to launch petty and snide attacks on DUP Ministers, such actions only exposed the UUP’s lack of ideas and answers. Instead we were treated to a series of flip-flops. Last week Mike Nesbitt was urging people to vote DUP yet today his party is repeatedly attacking the DUP. Mike is talking about unionist cooperation but his actions send a different message. A pact should be negotiated then announced. Not the other way round. A few weeks ago Mike Nesbitt was rightly standing against an Irish government seat at the talks table, yet on Thursday Mike sat at the talks table with the Irish government whilst our internal matters were discussed. Neither at St Andrews, Hillsborough nor any talks did the DUP ever sit at a table and discuss Northern Ireland’s internal affairs with the Irish government. Finally, every UUP speaker seemed eager to deride the interest free £100m loan to the Executive, which helped relieve pressures on our health service. Yet the DRD Minister was happy to take his cut of the loan. Indeed, there were very few Ulster Unionists talking about pay-day loans whenever their leader was disgracefully advertising 2000% loans on his own website.” DUP Press Office 91 Dundela Avenue Belfast BT4 3BU T: 02890 654479 ¦ E: [email protected] Web ¦ Follow us on Twitter ¦ Find us on Facebook ¦ Flickr ¦ YouTube
