UVU Jungle Marathon - 03.10.2013 Voted by CNN as the world’s toughest endurance race, Jungle Marathon is in its 9th year. The event takes place in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil, in a protected area of Forest called the Tapajos National Forest. There is a choice of three distances: a 42km marathon; a 122km 4-stage race and a 254km 6-stage race. Competitors are self-sufficient. They carry all they need during the race in a backpack, this includes food, a hammock, clothing, first aid kit, torch, whistle and are provided with water at checkpoints and medical and logistic support. Runners doing the marathon distance carry a hydration pack with the capacity of 3 litres and a few snacks and their first aid kit. This is real jungle. Competitors will swim across rivers filled with piranha and caiman. They will wade through swamps full of anacondas and ticks. They will face hideous climbs and descents in the deep jungle amongst jaguars, snakes and any number of other jungle creatures. They will sleep in hammocks in deep jungle within the heart of the Amazon. They will also run along white sandy fluvial beaches will be able to see the rare pink dolphins and they will cross tiny villages and meet indigenous communities. The terrain and combination of heat and humidity in such an extraordinary environment make this event a once in a lifetime experience.
