UWAJUMOGU TASKS CHURCHES ON SKILLS AND CREATION OF CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES TO STEM UNEMPLOYMENT Worried by the high spate of unemployment in the country, the Speaker, Imo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, has tasked churches in the country to strive to be in the vanguard of helping government, as well as relevant private investors in reducing the scourge of poverty and unemployment, especially, among their adherents through the establishment of an effective and functional co-operative societies. Speaking at the bi-annual convention of the Saviour’s Evangelical church, Okigwe, the Speaker emphasized the need for religious organizations to expedite action in purging the society with ills associated with poverty and joblessness, adding that time has gone when people were dependent on the government to provide virtually everything for them to aid a decent livelihood. He stated that it was imperative that every religious organization, conscious of the welfare and development of its adherents to form effective co-operative societies, as this would afford them the opportunity of securing incentives, loans and special attention from the government, as well as concerned private individuals for the onward betterment of their people. Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu also explained that such measure would spur their adherents into embracing entrepreneurship and becoming self-reliant, while government would see a veritable platform to launch its campaign and support the fight against rampaging poverty. Delivering a paper titled: “ The church and politics”, the Imo Assembly Speaker, maintained that the church has a major role to play in the advancement of any political system, adding that for the political leadership in the country to get it right, it must align in its fold, people who possess the fear of God to be able to lead the people aright. He urged the faithful to consider taking a career in politics, as this would brighten the chances of having dedicated and service-oriented individuals who would work selflessly and bring the needed change in our society, stressing that it had gone when people see politics as a career meant for those who they consider as not genuinely having the spirit of God. Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, noted that the church has been instrumental to the realization of effective political change, as was witnessed in the political revolution in the state in 2011, adding that in respect to that mandate, the current administration in the state has ensured it leaves up to the expectations of the masses who are desirous of change, by clearly implementing those policies and programs which have direct impact on the welfare of the citizenry. The Speaker also acknowledged the enormous task before the church in ensuring the institutionalization of good morals in our different societies, pointing out that such feat has gone a long way in re-directing the mindsets of our youths against engaging in acts capable of undermining the moral standards of our society. He further thanked the church for being a veritable institution for change and urged it not to relent in its support for a credible political atmosphere, as its constant prayers and solidarity have been an effective mechanism for the government’s excellent performance. The General Overseer of the ministry, Rev. S.K Nwaturuocha, while commending the Speaker for his performances since assuming office, as well as remaining steadfast in the service of God as one of the Trustees of the church, also enjoined the congregation to be prayerful for the Speaker in his bid to represent Okigwe zone at the senate, come 2015.
