UX and plumbing … The mens toilets on the ground floor of the building I work in have been refurbished, and ended up worse than they were before! Eye of the beholder and all that, but I do feel these are genuine faults that should have been identified and addressed. • the old-fangled turn to operate taps have been replaced by taps with proximity sensors. The idea is not that new, but I have yet to see it well-implemented: here, offering your hand where the sensor can detect it guarantees that the water will run off your hand and on to the surround. If you move your hand to let the water flow into the washbasin, the sensor obediently turns the water off. Loop until standing in two inches of water … [modesty filter – nice-minded readers stop here] • the old proximity sensors at the urinals (which, unlike those at the washbasins, did not guarantee wet feet) have been replaced. The new ones are strikingly composed of mirror-finished chrome and a polished strip of glass … and mounted lower down the wall. There are, surely, situations and circumstances where an exact and detailed reflection of reality is neither ideal nor strictly necessary :-}
