Uber muddles the issue to confound us: The problem isnt that Uber is marauding as a public service--tho it needs to be said that Ubers more vocal patrons & political defenders are the ones making it look like a public service--but that, regardless of its engagement w/ so-called private contracts, it encroaches on public transport that is regulated for the protection of public interest. It is the DOTCs specific responsibility to protect this public interest when it comes to transport & communication. If regulating Uber & other app-based services such as Grab Taxi & Easy Taxi is out of the LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board)s reach, the DOTC as the department directly responsible for transport (Uber hooks up passengers w/ drivers of private vehicles) & communication (Uber is an app on mobile devices) must intervene into Uber aggressively depriving other commuters of affordable, viable alternatives to the travesty mass transportation (trains such as the Dotc-Mrt3, buses) has become. Not to mention that DOLE Labor Communications Office must also look into how it can intervene into Ubers promotion of abusive labor practices that reproduce the precarity of drivers--& may this discussion over Ubers operations be a prompt for looking into securing proper wages & work benefits for everybody working in transport, from taxi drivers to bus drivers.
