Ugandan writer, Jennifer Makumbi, has been announced winner of the Kwani? Manuscript prize for unpublished fiction for her novel, ‘The Kintu Saga’. The work traces the history of Uganda into the present lives of the novel’s protagonists. Remember that of the 7 final shortlisted writers for the award – which was announced in April, 2013 - there were two Nigerians: Toni Kan for his novel, ‘The Carnivorous City’ and Ayobami Adebayo for his novel, ‘Stay With Me’. The others were a Ghanaian, Ayesha Harruna Attah; two Kenyans, Stanley Gazemba and Timothy Kiprop Kimutai; and one Liberian, Saah Millimono. Over 280 entries were initially received from 19 African countries. The prize is $3,500.
