Ugh... exactly. Ive had moms tell me how cute Aaliyah is and then turn to their own kids and ask, why couldnt you have had hair like that?. A darker toned lady working at Safeway told us once that shes lucky she isnt as dark as her dad because no one wants dark women. Aaliyah yelled at her and told her dont ever talk about my daddy like that. White folks always tell Aaliyah they love her fro and it reminds them of the seventies but except for a few black folks most tell her she needs grease in her hair or that it needs to be braided or pressed so she can look like me SMH If people arent saying crazy things like that theyre accusing me of trying to make them feel bad just by looking the way I do or acting like I stole their boyfriend or husband or were being accused of destroying the black family. Were just doing us and not worrying about anyone else so were getting kind of oblivious to it by now but other peoples self hate can still be annoying. Natives are 1% of the population. Were so exotic that everyone treats us differently anyway so I learned to let people handle their own issues a long time ago if they think they dont know anything appropriate to say. Whatever kinds of reactions people have to you are just a reflection of their own state of mind and its not going to affect us.
