Ugh... the whole raise the minimum wage debate was kicked up again today. Okay, minimum wage is NOT enough to raise a family on. But should every employer be punished for their employees lack of ambition? I dont earn enough money to pay my bills. So instead of getting a better job I think Ill yell at the government to make my employer pay me more for the same job. I mean, people KNOW what the minimum wage is and that it wont support a family yet they CHOOSE to start a family and make everyone else foot the bill for their poor choice. An employer tells you right when youre hired This is how much well pay you, and by working there you have accepted that as fair recompense for your work. Its NOT the employers fault that their employees chose to work there knowing beforehand that the offered wage would not cover their expenses. Its NOT the employers responsibility to take care of their employees families. I mean people have posted a breakdown of expenses clearly showing that the wage paid by McDonalds and such wont be enough to raise a family on. Shouldnt people look at that and say: Well I guess I should wait until I find a better job BEFORE I decide to start a family. However they dont. No, they go ahead have a family and then complain that its their employers fault they cant feed their kids. Please pay me more money because my own lack of foresight screwed me. The complete lack of accountability behind I cant raise a family on minimum wage is all on the people arguing it should be higher - not the people paying those wages. The American Dream was defined in 1931 by author/historian James Truslow Adams as: life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. The American Dream was a national ethos in which freedom included the opportunity for prosperity, success and upward social mobility achieved through hard work. Now the American Dream is simply: Do the least amount of work and expect the greatest possible reward. Why work or think for yourself when you can just make other hard working people cover those expenses for you?
